When I lay in bed at night
Trying desperately to fall asleep
I like to leave the windows open
I need to breathe in new air.
Air that’s not from the apartment
Its a reminder to me that there’s more
So I don’t wake up and feel trapped
Reminds me threes a whole world to see.
I need that reminder-
That's the reason I look to Spring
Not for the flowers - they're hypocrites.
They are weak; retreating to dirt at the first sign of cold-
& not for the spring showers...
Though, I confess to enjoy them often-
That is, when such thunder doesn’t interrupt my
already difficult time to fall asleep.
No - I look to spring simply for a slightly warmer breeze-
I find it easier to fall asleep with that Spring breeze as opposed to winters -
Springs' breeze carry’s the scent of rain
While winters' breeze smells of bitter cold and exhaust
When I lay in bed at night
I have to try desperately to fall asleep.
You see - I am not good at falling asleep.
Just as I am no good at sharpening pencils
& removing shampoo from my hair.
I fail at tasks that I imagine few would.
So when I lay in bed at night
Trying desperately to fall asleep
I like to leave the window open
& for that reason, I wait-
Anticipating the smell of rain as I lay in bed,
Waiting-
Perhaps too anxiously,
For the arrival of Spring.
