There’s a safety in the darkness
A safety in the scratching of nails
Against the lid of a coffin
A safety in the end –
In the reality of hate
In the fear of growing up
Or the spreading of disease
In empty promises
And nightmares
There’s a safety in death
And change
And guilt
A safety in being strangers
In never saying you love them
In pain
In sobbing
In giving up before the end of the race
In never reaching the surface
There’s a safety in denial
And corruption
Because it’s consistent
And never fails to follow through
Darkness inevitably comes
And lies eventually surface
Guilt eats you alive
And the dead seek revenge
Nothing stays buried
That’s why it’s safe
Because you can always expect it
Sooner or later.
